John Proctor does seem truly sorry for his sin of adultery but he can't forgive himself. In result of Proctor committing adultery, Elizabeth does not forgive him and this causes trust issues between the two. When Elizabeth doesn't forgive Proctor, this makes him angry but at the same time he cannot forgive himself for cheating creating an internal conflict. If I were in Elizabeth's”shoes, I would not be able to forgive Proctor because when he decided to cheat and that shows he isn't a loyal spouse and can not be trusted. Proctor couldn't be trusted because he wouldn't be able to stay true to his would and you could hold that against him for the time he committed adultery. In my opinion you can't give a cheater a second chance because once
