There were three major compromises reached at the Constitutional Convention. The firsts compromise was, The Great Compromise (Connecticut Compromise), which came from two plans that were brought forth called, The Virginia Plan and The New Jersey Plan. The Virginia plan called for strong national government and three legislative branches. One would be directly elected by the people, the second would be selected from those whom were elected to the first house, and the third the president and national court systems, would be elected by and created from legislature. The New Jersey Plan entailed congress to regulate trade, each state would receive one vote, acts of congress would be supreme, more than one executive office would be elected by congress, and the executive office to appoint Supreme Court. This compromise gave something to both sides, larger states would have more representatives than smaller ones. However, each state would have two members in the Senate regardless of size.
Separation of powers allows the government to be divided into groups called legislative, who are in charge of making laws; executive, who enforce the laws; and judicial, who decide on the punishment for breaking laws. This separation allows them to focus on one job and one group does not have more authority over another. Checks and balances are designed to keep one branch from gaining too much power.
