Explain What Drives History

According to Marx what drives history is the need to sustain life and to fulfill basic human needs. This includes things such as food and shelter. In order to have things such as food and shelter someone needs to produce these. Once an efficient way to produce these things has emerged and these basic needs are met more complex needs now need attention. These complex needs include things such as pleasure and self-fulfillment. This is a never ending cycle because there are always going to be needs that need to be met and there are always going to be advances to come up with more convenient ways to meet these needs. Another force that drives history is the need for reproduction. Reproduction is part of human nature and is a necessity in order to continue human life. If it wasn’t human nature to reproduce our species would just die out.

There is both good and bad when it comes to capitalism. One of the positive things of capitalism is competition. Everyone wants to be the best and many will try to come up with ways so they end up on top. With people competing with each other many new advances are made. Another positive aspect of capitalism is the emergence of unions. Unions allow people to have a group of people to rely on and band together. Very few are actually able to oversee the way things are run, most people are the ones that have to do the hard work and labor. Since there are only a few people controlling this it is easy for them to keep most of the profit and pay their workers very little.
