It is important for children to have independence with their care routines. It is the practitioner’s role to promote this independence. When toilet training the practitioner needs to make sure that the child is physically and emotional ready to start toilet training as it differs with each child. They should ask the child often if they need the toilet as well as understanding the child’s signs when needing the toilet. The practitioner should praise the child and give positive encouragement before and after use. Also they should teach the child to wipe themselves, how to pull up their own clothes and how to flush the toilet. Children need to know how and why they wash and dry their hands, explaining about germs. The practitioner’s role is to show the children the correct way to wash their hands and encouraging and praising the children for washing.
Children need to have independence when caring for their skin and teeth. In my setting the children brush their teeth after lunch; the practitioner demonstrates how to and encourages the children throughout. Each child must have their own toothbrush with their name clearly displayed for the child to recognise. They also wash their own faces after eating when they wash their hands. The

At meal times children’s allergies should be clearly displayed, in my setting the children have photo cards at the back of their chair displaying their allergies; the child finds their own seat. The practitioner should always encourage the children to try new foods and taste the food for children who are unsure. Children at the appropriate age should serve up their own food and pour their own drinks, as well as empty their plates when they are finished. There should be a choice of milk or water for the children to choose
