Unmasking the Face by Paul Ekman is a book that is designed to teach readers how to distinguish a person’s feelings based on their facial expressions. Paul Ekman starts the book off by explaining what the focuses or the point of his book is. The first focus is about whether you understand your own facial expression and emotions or not. The second focus is about the feelings behind those facial expressions. Based on the first focus, it is all about knowing your feelings or not knowing your feelings. Ekman asks the questions “What is it really like to be afraid? What does it feel like in your body? What situations make you afraid? Can you anticipate when you will be afraid? Can you be afraid and angry at the same time? When you are afraid, do you get aggressive, withdrawn, or thoughtful?” Based on these questions, if the reader finds it difficult to answer then he says that they are “Out of touch with their feelings.” This is due to the ignorance of one self’s own feelings. Ekman separated the chapters into different emotions per chapter: chapter 4 is surprise, chapter 5 is fear, chapter 6 is disgust, chapter 7 anger, chapter 8 is happiness, and chapter 9 is sadness. Each chapter consist of facial expressions pertaining to each emotion. For example based off of chapter four, the subject’s “surprised” faces contained more wrinkles on the upper part of the face due to the lifting of both the eyebrows, leaving long horizontal lines across the forehead. In addition to the rugose skin on the forehead while surprised, the upper eyelids are also raised higher while the lower Eyelids were relaxed.
