1. Chapter 1 part 1: "The hearth and the salamander Guy Montag is a fireman in charge of the burning books in a grim “futuristic” United States. Guy Montag says that it is a pleasure to burn and see things "blackened and changed"(1). Guy Montag wears a helmet that says 451 the temperature where paper burns. He believes that he has "hands" of an amazing conductor burning the ruins of history"(1). Clarisse McClellan, seventeen years old, becomes Montag's neighbor, and starts interrogating him on his activity, such as, "do you ever read any of the books you burn?"(5). Chapter 2 part 2: "The sieve and the sand"
Montag talks to Mildred and her friends about poetry, and they express their hate. Mildred makes fun of Montag, and makes him read a poem aloud. Mrs. Bowles grows frustrated, and vows to "never come in the fireman's crazy house again"(97). Montag tells Mrs. Bowles to go home and think about why her husbands divorced her or committed suicide, and why her children hate her guts"(98). The fire station gets a call, and they all rush off to Montag's house.

6. Chapter 3 part 1: "Burning bright"
As firemen start to break the windows of Montag's house, Mildred runs out to a beetle-taxi with a suitcase. Faber talks to Montag through the ear piece, and tries to convince him to run off, but the "small orange flame" distracted him (109). Montag worries that he can't get away, because "the hound" is in the neighborhood (110). Captain Beatty makes Montag is a flamethrower to burn down his house. He sees the books "dance like roasted birds"(110). Captain Beatty tells Montag that he'll be "arrested when he's done"(111). Montag finds out that Mildred turned in the alarm. Call and so did her friends a couple hours previous. Montag gets so mad at Beatty, that he shoots him with the flamethrower. As he grabs the four forgotten books, Montag realizes that, "Beatty wanted to die"(116). Montag runs to a fellow fireman's house and hides a book, then phones and alarm from a public telephone

Immediately, Montag thinks to run to the river so that he could cover himself and liquor, and change into Fabers' old clothes. Through his seashell, Montag hears a command-directed towards everyone-to look through their doors or windows, so that "the fugitive can't escape"(132). The hound and the helicopters catch up to the river, but they don't see Montag hiding underwater. Montag comes across a group of men in the forest who claim to be books. The men memorize books, then burn them, because it's "better to keep it in the old heads"(145).
