Throughout the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses several different types of figurative language to impact the story. The use of figurative language in a piece of literature can have many different purposes. Figurative language can emphasize a point being made using word choice and/or an image that isn’t meant to be taken literally. It can also be used for connecting the reader’s senses to the character’s senses in order to immerse the reader; and cause them to relate to the character. Or maybe the author just wants to make a line sound particularly eloquent. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury uses figurative language in order to develop new themes in the story and to develop character. Bradbury uses metaphors as well as imagery in order to establish themes and context of the story. Guy Montag’s character develops as the story goes on, albeit, Bradbury uses figurative language to establish his character from the start of the novel. Page 1 states, “With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history.” This metaphor is empowering the concept of burning books, comparing the hose to a great python, a powerful creature, and comparing his control of the kerosene as conducting symphonies that play beautiful music.
