Fahrenheit 451 Gender Roles

In life and in Fahrenheit 451, people and characters are separated by their gender. Women seem to have always been known as the weaker sex. In this book, men seem to have more physical power and have rough and tough jobs in this community, whereas the women have less dangerous jobs and use less strength than the men in the jobs they have. The separate worlds of the men and women seems to suggest women are not of value and the men are respected more than the women. Guy Montag, who is the main character, has diverse outlooks about his community. He seems to be tough on the outside but he is actually sad about having to burn the books when the alarm sounds. Guy is a fireman who wants to use his strength and knowledge to change the way the general public looks at the use of books and technology. Knowing he will be imprisoned if he is caught reading, he continues to be bold and dauntless trying to save his community. Guy’s wife, Mildred does not work out in the public. She stays home and her job is to cook and clean the house. After she gets her “chores” complete, she watches TV in the parlor. The women do not have jobs or have a say in anything that happens in their home or out in the community. For example, Guy came home and asked for dinner Mildred immediately went into the kitchen and made his dinner. The women characters have the same daily routine each day to ensure they fill the needs of the men. The reason that women are portrayed as not being tough or strong, is so they get the simple or more feminine
