Fahrenheit 451 Isolation Analysis

Being alone whether it is psychologically or physically can be devastating. Isolation is being set apart from others, or being singled out. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the characters face isolation in their society. Montag, in particular faces times that he feels alone or separated from his environment. Montag exemplifies isolation through his experience with Clarisse, Mildred, and the firemen. Montag experiences isolation through his experience with Clarisse. Montag tells Captain Beatty, “There was a girl next door…She’s gone now, I think dead. I can’t even remember her face. But she was different” (Bradbury 60). Montag experiences isolation because he cannot find Clarisse, who was missing. Montag asks Mildred, “You know, the high school girl. Clarisse, her name is…I haven’t seen her for a few days –four days to be exact. Have you seen her” (Bradbury 47)? Even in my own life, I often feel separated from my own environment. When I struggle with things such as walking through a difficult path, I feel like no one understands and relates to me. In addition, I also see people around me that experience isolation. I see these people sitting alone, or trying to fit in with others. In a similar way, Montag struggled with isolation because no one could understand his perspective. Even though people of the same profession and household surrounded Montag, he felt separated from them. Montag also lost Clarisse, who had opened his eyes and gave him a new perspective of life.
