Ray Bradbury has a present “author’s hand” throughout Fahrenheit 451. His use of figurative language, metaphors in particular, deepen the messages within the story. A passage that clearly shows this can be found on page 56,“A book is a loaded gun next door.” While it is a short metaphor, it is a powerful one. Through the course of the novel, Fire Captain Beatty attempts to convince Montag of the danger that books hold. “You always dread the unfamiliar” he says on page 50. Later, Mildred Montag’s friends flee from the Montag household in fear of the poetry contained inside. “Why don’t you read us a poem from your little book there?..’That’s not right!’ cried Mrs. Bowels, ‘we can’t do that!’” page 95. The citizens are afraid of novels, because
