The reason part two of Fahrenheit 451 is called “Sieve in the Sand” is because towards the beginning of the section Montag flashes back to being a child on the beach. “And the faster he poured, the faster it sifted through with a hot whispering. His hands were tired; the sand was boiling the sieve was empty.” (74) His cousin told him if he could fill his sieve all the way to the top with sand he would get a dime. The young Montag was frustrated because the sieve couldn't hold onto all the sand, and he did not get the dime. This connects throughout the chapter when Montag is struggling to understand the meaning of the books he is beginning to read. The words seemed to just fall through him like sand in a sieve and do not have any meaning to
