The government can also hire African American workers. The government should not redistribute land to the freed slaves, though, since the people own the land and would revolt angrily if the government takes the property by force. However, if enough of the plantation owner’s former slaves found other jobs with better benefits, then the people with large plantations would have a hard time maintaining their business. If the government buys the old plantations, then the government can sell or give the land to whomever wants the property. Selling land in the West also helps to expand the country and raise money for the government. The selling of the land helps many types of people find a new home to show independence and own something for themselves, since the land in the West sells for less money. Segregation proved itself as one of the biggest problems of the Reconstruction Era. Some of the former slave owners, among others, still did not want black Americans to have the same freedom as a white person. This lead to the making of Jim Crow laws and black codes.
