The Reconstruction Era brought difficulty to the United States. The government struggled to find a way to integrate the South back into the country while helping the newly freed slaves find a life for themselves. Some Southerners objected to the new rights of the African Americans and reacted violently. The slave owners, among others, did not want the former slaves to have the same rights as whites, leading to black codes and Jim Crow laws that segregated the African American community and limited their independence. The failure of the federal government to stop these injustices lead to intolerance and discrimination for future years. The government can also hire African American workers. The government should not redistribute land to the freed slaves, though, since the people own the land and would revolt angrily if the government takes the property by force. However, if enough of the plantation owner’s former slaves found other jobs with better benefits, then the people with large plantations would have a hard time maintaining their business. If the government buys the old plantations, then the government can sell or give the land to whomever wants the property. Selling land in the West also helps to expand the country and raise money for the government. The selling of the land helps many types of people find a new home to show independence and own something for themselves, since the land in the West sells for less money. Segregation proved itself as one of the biggest problems of the Reconstruction Era. Some of the former slave owners, among others, still did not want black Americans to have the same freedom as a white person. This lead to the making of Jim Crow laws and black codes. The federal government should not allow the states to make laws that limit the rights any person, no matter the race of the person.
