Is this fair? Education gives people of the lower class the tools to build a concrete ladder that they can use to climb the social hierarchical order within the United States. There are preexisting institutions and prejudices that prevent a significant portion of the population from being able to build their own ladders. This keeps an entire class of people at the bottom, working long exhausting hours for low wages, meanwhile keeping those who have money at the top regardless of their skill set. The mere access to education allows for an entire network to be made, and those without that network are more likely to be left in the shadows. According to Williams, in order to counteract these types of inequalities within the social order, there is a civic responsibility that we adopt social and/or political reforms aimed at bringing about equality of opportunity in education. I agree with this premise because I believe that we should attempt to mitigate the unfairness within the United States system so that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Society needs to have equality of opportunity, and ensuring that everyone has an equal chance at achieving greatness without taking their personal talents and intelligence into play is essential to having a balanced society.
