Certain events occur between Odysseus and his crew because there is a lack of trust between them. Odysseus tells his crew ,”I must shun this island of the sun,”[page 218, line 352-353]. He shows a lack of trust, because he used the pronoun “I”, instead of “We”. Also, he uses the word “shun” to imply, this he wants to avoid this island rather than stay away from danger. The crew responds ,”Here we all are … falling asleep over the oars”[page 219, line 362-363]. The crew does not want to listen to him, because they do not trust them. In addition, Odysseus informs his men to not kill the God’s Cattle. Due to the lack of assurance between his men and himself, the men decided to kill the cattle. This caused an punishable tone because Helios states, “O Father Zezus and gods in bliss forever, punish Odysseus’ men!” [page 222, line 484-485]. The sleeping imagery means the Crew is tired of facing reality and they want to sleep and go to a virtual reality. They want to go to a virtual reality because they want to see their family again and want to go to Ithaca. They also might want to live a life of no war and just peace at home. Odysseus does not want them to go to a virtual reality, because he fears they may lose focus, he wants his crew to keep going. However, he does not follow this advice, because he does fall asleep. Odysseus states, “Closed my eyes under slow drops of sleep”[Page 221, line 432-433]. He describes sleep as a slow process because it takes low amount of will power to be distracted. Odysseus has avoided distraction, such as the siren song. He wants to remain focus because he wants to go see his family.
