Lorelai
Given Circumstances:
This scene is set in the late afternoon hours at the Gilmore family house. Lorelai is a woman currently in her 30’s, and is the only daughter of Richard and Emily Gilmore. She was brought up in a wealthy family but was always rebellious and resentful of her structured, sheltered and silver spoon upbringing. Lorelai is also the mother of Rory, whom she became pregnant with at the age of 16. Against her parent’s wishes, Lorelai refused to marry Rory's father, because she felt that a marriage at such a young age would not work out. Her disagreements with her parents led to her leaving home at age 16 and making the decision to raise her daughter on her own. She begins to work as a maid at an Inn and eventually works her way up to her current position as the executive manager. However, in order to afford Rory’s private high school tuition fees, Lorelai had to suck up her pride and return home to ask her parents for financial assistance.

Lorelai has a strained relationship with her parents. For many years, Lorelai maintained close to no contact with them, except for visits during major holidays. The rebelliousness of her teen years stayed with her in adulthood. She feels that her parents were embarrassed and disappointed with the fact that she became pregnant as a teenager.

Lorelai and Rory have a relationship similar to that of two best friends or sisters, rather than a parental one. She sees them as best friends first, mother-daughter second. Lorelai only uses the "mom card" as a last resort. She wants only the best for Rory and is willing to put Rory before herself and her pride.

Obstacles:
Lorelai wants to approach her parents for financial assistance with Rory’s tuition fees. However, Emily uses this as a means to reconnect and be involved in Lorelai and Rory’s lives. Against Lorelai’s wishes, she insists that both Lorelai and Rory have a weekly dinner with her. This puts Lorelai in a situation where she now has to decide between having to reconcile with her family and not sending her Rory to Chilton school.

Consequences:
Rory would not have the privilege of attending the prestigious Chilton high school.

Spine:
Lorelai’s long-term objective is to provide the best for Rory.
