The Outsiders has the robust themes of family and belonging. The novel is a tragedy and thru its calamitous events that Ponyboy (the narrator and protagonist) learns of their importance. After the passing of both his dad and mom in a car accident, Ponyboy is raised by his older brothers. The death of their parents and the sudden changes to their lives affected each of the boys differently. Ponyboys oldest brother Darry had to take on the role of being the parent of his two younger brothers and gives up on his dream of university and playing for the college football team insead he takes on two jobs.
