You cross paths with people every day without knowing what is going on in their lives and for some, you may never find out what life is really like for them or their family. There will always be bumps in everyone’s lives, for some people it will be a minor setback, while others will fight for years to get back to normal. My story starts with two close family members who suffered with substance abuse, my brother and grandmother. Their abuse took a major toll on my family, got them into trouble, and created health problems for themselves. It tore our family apart for a long time, until they were able to make the change for themselves.

My brother, who is now in his thirties started using when he was just a teenager. Throughout my childhood, I can recall multiple times he would come home under the influence of multiple different drugs. He would often have mood swings and be in a complete rage until he was able to get his next fix. Before long he was destroying my family, my mom could not take seeing him in the state that he was in. She was misdiagnosed for a medical condition and prescribed narcotic drugs which unknowing to her, became her addiction. She had trusted her doctor and in January of 2016, it almost cost her life. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital; her organs were giving up. She has never fully recovered from the damage done to her body due to the narcotic drugs. My mom had many stressful hours spent with her and had missed many important things that were happening right in our own home. It was difficult for me and my dad to take care of everything by ourselves as we have many animals, plus I just missed
