I am applying to the Master of Marriage and Family Therapist program because I feel there is need for more professionals to work in the field of mental health in especially Urban communities. Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are the unsung heroes to many people and I want to be one of the heroes. What lead me to wanting to be a mental health heroes was my passion for sports. Presently I work as an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Bishop Montgomery High School. As a coach my responsibility is to make my students better basketball players so they could perform on the court. What I realize their performance wasn’t dictated by their skills but by their mental mindset. When my players were dealing with personal problems, I could see how it effect their game in a way that was bigger than wins and losses. When I stopped looking at my players as X’s and O’s and seeing them as young minds struggling to separate personal problems and basketball. I felt like I had an obligation to be there for them and listen to what was on their minds. I have had many individual conversations with my players. I would love to work with athletes who suffers from mental health struggles from high school level to the professional level. One of the most overused cliché in sports is that “90 percent of performance is mental” but rarely coaches and parents focus on the player’s mental aspect and too many times I have seen players suffer from not taking care of their mental game. Being a retired NCAA student’s athlete I understand the athletes mind set and what it takes to survive in the world of sports. With a masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and my sports background, I feel this will supply me with the right training to deal athletes who struggles with mental
