Family therapy in substance abuse treatment have two fundamental goals: 1) use the support and leverage of the family to reduce the individuals’ drug use and implement positive lifestyle changes and 2) recognize family strengths and dysfunctions to bring out positive changes in the family and promote long-term recovery (Fals-Stewart et al., and Center for Substance Abuse 2009).
