A tale of two women composers Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Clara Wieck Schumann were iconic and extraordinary women during the Romantic era. Each of these women were German composers, whom turned to the art of music for individual purposes. The lives that women led were much different than the lives men led, reason being that there were less opportunities provided to the women during this era. The challenges these two women faced, and the way they had handled them shaped them as composers, and imprinted on the art of music. Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel was a recognizable pianist and composer during the Romantic era, with many works that exposed her talents. She had not been sincerely recognized as a musician in the beginning; she had been well-known as the older sister of her brother Felix, whom had been a celebrity performer and a composer. For most of her life, she had even composed her work under her brother’s name, until one year before she had died. I find the composer; Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel had conformed to the expectations that society had placed upon her. With the filtered exposure of her work through the name of her brother, she had been conforming to the expectations of society; considering it had not been acceptable for women during these times. I find the composer; Clara Wieck Schumann had rebelled against the expectations society had placed upon her. Before and after the passing of her husband, she had worked hard to pursue multiple careers for herself aside from the expectations society had of the women during this era.
