Summary 1984 is set in a totalitarianism government which means that they try to control every aspect of people’s lives. Winston smith is the main character in this book. He as well as every other citizen in Oceania knows that there is a war going on but they don’t really understand what is going on. The government tries to control everything you do. They do this by having televisions in everyone’s home that watches them and there are also cameras and microphones in the street on posters that say “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” and in their homes called the thought police. There is a person in Winston’s life that he cares about but he just hasn’t met her yet. Her name is Julia, she is a mechanic of some sort. They meet at a 2 minute hate (a pep rally to hate on a man who has tried to rebel on the government) and he instantly hates her mainly because he cannot have her or the thought police would catch him and kill him. Julia and Winston end up running into the country to be off of the radar of the thought police for just a little bit and both realize that they hate the government. So they rebel (secretly). Turns out that Winston’s boss is part of the rebellion as well and gives Winston and Julia a book that describes what the rebellion is about. The thought police catch them and send them both to the torcher rooms. They end up beating all of the thought of each other and rebellion out of them. The last words in the book say “He loves big brother.”

Theme The theme I got from this story is that a human being can be broken down completely till he will believe exactly what you want him to.
Moral
Be thankful America is a democracy.

What people can learn from this In this book people can learn that if you are a strong minded person in a totalitarianism government, they will try and shoot you down at whatever length because you will pose as a threat to their power.
