Tolkien’s unique and beloved tales of Middle Earth, there are many heroes, yet none as unusual as the quirky Farmer Giles who is dragged through a raging torrent of adventure, to his displeasure. Farmer Giles was a hero because he was a humble, peaceful farmer who did the right thing despite his fear. Farmer Giles was a hero because when even the Knights of the Kingdom did not come to the rescue, Giles stepped up to save the terrorized town and countryside. Farmer Giles was a hero because in the face of danger, he refused to back down unlike the King’s brave knights who fled at the first sight of the furious dragon.
Farmer Giles was a hero because he was not like many adventurous tales with a brave, skilled knight who battles all kinds of foul beasts and dangerous creatures without fear. In the beginning of the story, it is made crystal clear that Farmer Giles is a simple man, who generally avoids conflict. He is not a dashing, wise character, but he has good morals, and he does what is right. He does not seem like the best character for the story, but Tolkien uses him to do great things, instead of the King who acts as though he is a god. Farmer Giles was a hero because he did not parade around on a white steed coated in glistening armor, telling tales of his endeavors, he merely did the right thing in the face of danger. Farmer Giles was a hero because when those who were supposed to be heroic did not come forward, he stepped up to do the job of others who had failed. Farmer Giles was also a hero because in the face of danger, he stood firm in his belief, and he became victorious. Although Farmer Giles seemed pathetic and useless, he dominated and changed a part of the world in his own humble
