The last section of Mountains Beyond Mountains explains Farmer’s efforts to fix Haiti. Haiti is his home and always on his mind. In Cange, Farmer wanted companies to lower prices for drugs. In order to make a profit, companies must charge a high price for drugs. Partners in Health (PIH) suffered from an infinancial jeopardy because companies would not bother to donate any supplies. It was an interesting process how a team of health workers and doctors resuced a boy, John from Haiti diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which is a rare form of cancer. The plan was to bring John to the US for effective procedures to alliveate his pain and potentially cure him. A hospital provided to take care of his procedure for free in the US. The boy, John’s condition was very cricital, in which the team did not know whether a commerical airline would be the best solution to transport him there. Although, John made it safely to the US and immediately started procedures, the procedures were unable to save him. The team felt ashamed after all the effort to bring John to the US, cure him and were still unable to help him. The team during that time realized that there so many other people in Haiti that need help. It can not be only what Farmer does, there must be others willing to help people that are unable to help themselves. One of the quotes that I found interesting in this section was when “If Paul is the model, we’re fucked”(pg.244). Kim made this quote because the workers in PIH admired Farmer’s work and wanted to be exactly like him. It is impossible to be just like Farmer, the workers should view him as an example of how doctors should act towards
