In the ever growing times that brings both challenge and triumph that individuals may have to face in todays world, a concept that we should all keep in mind is that an impact of sisterhood or the bond two females can share with one another can be of great benefit to affect on an individuals viewpoints and way of living. In the book “Farming of Bones”, written by Haitian-American novelist Edwidge Danticat, we see this concept of sisterhood through out the story of two women. In the novel we are introduced to many male and female characters. The two characters I would like to discuss in the symbolism of sisterhood, is the main character and whom she works for. We first get acquainted with Amabelle, a Haitian native who is living and working in the Dominican Republic, who does all she can to make it through life (Tumblr). Amabelle is working for a highly respected Domincan family, Senora Valencia, and her husband Senor Pico. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, sisterhood is defined as the close relationship among women based on shared experiences and concerns. Throughout her life she has had to endure many traumatic events in her life, which in my opinion has made her the ultimate fighter and survivor for the future events that she will have to overcome. She eventually finds her way to the Dominican after being saved as a young child, where she spends her upbringing from young child to adulthood. Growing up in her mental state of mind was not ideal for Amabelle, since she is often haunted into her maturity by reoccurring nightmares of the tragic death of her parents, then being witness, as an adult to another act of terror (Larrier). The experiences she endures makes for a resilient sisterhood bond, to the women she grows up with and eventually ends up working for, Senora
