Post-traumatic stress disorder

Fifteen years ago, my niece was diagnosed with Post-traumatic stress disorder, by-poplar and many other ailments. What had caused these ailments was that she was raped at an early age and never received any help from this tragedy. She would have mood-swings, keeping to herself, cried all the time, and nobody knew what was causing this behavioral. She wasn’t diagnosed with Post-traumatic stress disorder until she was adult and had a child of her own. With plenty of research done by doctors, institutions, and people who have experiences with people who had been diagnosed with PTSD has some type of trauma in their lives. Years ago it was diagnosed with men and women who served the military services, but not with people who been through a tragedy. The World Health Organization states that this disorder is one that people may develop in response to one or more traumatic events, such as deliberate acts of interpersonal violence, severe accidents, disasters, or military action (1992). People need to be more aware of this disease so they can get the proper help they needs.

Over many years ago, PTSD was diagnosed mostly among war veterans who had suffered with PTSD, because of the trauma they had experienced in war. Later not only did veterans had suffered with PTSD, but also people who was involved in a person who has experience a traumatic events usually would avoid going the places, people, or other things that reminds them of them of the event. The World Health Organization states that this disorder is one that people may develop in response to one or more traumatic events, such as deliberate acts of interpersonal violence, severe accidents, disasters or military action (1992). These events don’t only happens to military combat, terrorism, natural disasters, car accidents and a personal attacks, such as a rape victim. People who had experience a traumatic events usually would avoid going to places, associating with people, or other things that reoccurs the event.

When reading and doing research on PTSD, it is also found in many races, like African American, Hispanics, and Native American, compared to Caucasians in the United States. Dr. Roxanne Dryden Edward, M.D., states that Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an emotional illness that that is classified as an anxiety disorder and usually develops as a result of a terribly frightening, life threatening, or otherwise highly unsafe experience (1992). The symptoms are to have memories or flashback of the event, some may have nightmares or a racing beats of the heart. Those who suffer with posttraumatic stress disorder, usually would avoid people, places, thoughts, or activities that reminds them of their trauma. They may suffer numbness, emotionless, and withdrawn. They also feels like they always have to be “on guard”, sleeping troubles and having difficulty concentrating and sudden burst of anger. Being diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, some people are very paranoid, and rather live in isolated places and live where there are less people.

I was diagnosed with this disease, when my brother was murdered by the neighborhood thugs. It wasn’t easy to get over it, but with the proper help and group therapy, our whole family was able to deal with it. There will be many tragedies in our lives, but we need to seek help and learn how to deal with it, not on our own, but with professional help and medications. For many years, I had blamed myself, because I felt that I could have done something to avoid this from happening, by being aware of the situation better. I was taught that it wasn’t my blame, but it was the life he had lived.

There are many professional help that is available for someone who is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, by having behavioral therapy with a
