To initially begin with article, Lee explains the why fasting is a necessity in everyone’s life. The writer states, by fasting “our food, our friends, our lovers,” individuals are able to obtain a needed balance. While taking a break from the things that are loved, people can reevaluate why they loved these things in the first place. This in turn helps the relationship grow even more. This is caused by the fact that people are able to realize that they truly miss the things they gave up; they are able to remember why these items are important in their life. Lee even relates this situation to hunters that would go off for long periods of time. This is demonstrated when she states, “So I think we should arrange to give up our pleasures regularly.” When the author uses “we” throughout the article, it is directed at not only herself, but everyone. Lee believes that by fasting, the world would greatly benefit. However, to have a substantial result, the entire public would have to fast their most loved items. If it the article was not directed towards the public, no one would understand the benefit. Show multiple times throughout the article, the main purpose was to inform readers about fasting. This is shown when the author states, “Fasting is an act of homage to the majesty of appetite,” in the initial sentence. In the article, Lee explains what fasting is and then goes on to explain its benefits. The author strong believes that fasting is extremely beneficial which why she wants the whole world to be informed about it.
