Imagine waking up in the early morning knowing you’ll have to face a school bully. Bullying is a problem everywhere. Including in the story “Fear” by Gary Soto. Some people believe bullies are to blame, while others feel that their teacher,the parents,or the siblings are to blame. After examining both sides, Frankie T. should not be held responsible for his actions because his home life is unstable, and is socially and emotionally damaged.

Others may believe that Frankie should be held responsible for his choices. They assert this because he harms innocent children and causes them damage. Another reason they argue he should be blamed is because if you don’t hold him responsible, a cycle of abuse will begin. Nevertheless, I believe he he shouldn’t be held responsible for reasons that will be argued below.

On the contrary, Frankie shouldn’t be to blame because his home life is unstable. In the story, the narrator says,”We knew the house he lived in: The empty refrigerator,the father gone,the mother in a sad bathrobe,the beatings,the yearnings for something to love.” This quote

In the story “Fear” it says,”I stared at his face...and just went along with the insults” and “I stood by him,nervous and red-faced from struggling… he suggested that we climb the monkey bars together.” Basicly, the narrator thought it was strange that his bully who had just hit him ask to climb the monkey bars together. This is showing how he is damaged because he wants to make friends with the narrator, but the narrator wants to leave. Another reason which proves Frankie is damaged is found in the video “The Roots of Bullying.” It says,”Bullies are insecure so they start bullying others.” This once again connects to Frankie because for some people to be insecure they have to be socially and emotionally damaged.
