In an editorial of the The New York Times titled “Fear Ignorance, Not Muslims” which is about the recent incident happened in California and how it is affecting the life of American Muslims living in the United States. The article states ignorance about islam is deep and widespread.The mass murdered that happened in California shows its links with the Islamic States. After that incident, Americans show their outrage, anger and hatred towards Muslims by saying that mosques should be shut down and all Muslim community living in America should be monitored. According to functionalists shared values and norms are fundamental to a society and each part of social structure plays a role in making a society come together as a whole.On the other hand, conflict theory explains social life as a constant struggle between groups and classes for power and scarce resources.
