In “The Norwegian Rat”, Naguib Mahfouz creates fear for the characters in this story. This all begins when he talks about something lurking in the shadows, made to surface any minute and contact the villagers, when in reality, there are no Norwegian rats to cause panic. While there is nothing to actually be afraid of, people have already made clear that the rats in their imagination is more than enough to panic.
