Fear In The Kao Family

In the Kao household, as with many traditional Chinese families, fear is rewarded. Two of the sons of the Kao family, Cheuh-Hsin, the, "... firstborn of the firstborn," and Cheuh-hui, the "...Third Young Master," (Chin, 19) and their fears are the focus of this essay. Cheuh-Hsin exhibits almost absolute filial piety while Chueh-hui does whatever he can to rebel against his family. These two supposedly conflicting characters, nonetheless, have several intrinsic values in common with each other, as portrayed throughout the novel. In this essay, I am going to examine the fears of Cheuh-Hsin and Cheuh-hui and compare and contrast their characters.
