Finding Nemo, directed by Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich, is a children’s film that follows the story of three main characters: Nemo, Marlin, and Dory. The beginning of the film starts with Marlin and his wife watching over their eggs, when all of a sudden a barracuda attacks. Marlin’s wife and all but one of the eggs is eaten by the barracuda, and Marlin names the one remaining egg Nemo, meaning “nobody” in Latin. Marlin is very protective over his son Nemo. During an incident of Marlin’s overprotectiveness, Nemo swims away from his father and gets captured by scuba divers. Marlin tries to save his son, and along the way he meets Dory, a fish with short term memory loss. The pair attempt to find Nemo by using an address on a pair of scuba goggles that managed to escape from the boat when Nemo was captured. She is not the traditional Disney female character. She does not wholly depend on a male for support; instead she and Marlin both depend on each other. She has gone through many hardships in her life and therefore is unstable and in need of family and community. Dory’s character is brave, steadfast, and devoted throughout the movie despite the conflicts she faces along the way.
The concepts of alternative roles in family life in the film can be a positive perspective for children to have. Children may see that their own family is not totally traditional and feel as though that is okay after watching the film. Kids are easily impressionable and seeing other families different than their own can impact their thoughts and beliefs on other families and cause them to be more accepting. Finding Nemo can help teach children that it does not matter how a family is set up or who is in it, what really matters is that there are people that surround them and that they are loved and cared
