In this modern time, feminism is being discussed more and more. This is a topic surrounded by controversies and myths. It is being skewed in the eyes of children and young adults. One myth that is common is the idea that feminism is over and it is currently unnecessary in modern times. In the article, “Our Revolution Has Just Begun”, Gloria Steinem outlines why feminism is still important in modern times and how intersectionality factors into it. As feminism has progressed, we have started to notice that different aspects of our lives are not as separate was we previously assumed. Society is so focused on trying to decide which topic is more important to abolish when the real answer is both, at the same time. Steinem brings this topic up by asking “do enough people understand that racism and sexism are intertwined, and can only be uprooted together” (Steinem 30). These are the two largest issues society need to work on. Throughout this course, and other courses like this, we have discussed how race and sex play a role in our views on society. Every human being is raised with a base of racism and sexism. for example, children are taught that they should be strong and cold if they are boys, and weak and homely if they are girls. They are also taught underlying ideals of racism. They see the way their parent talk about, and act around People of Color, which gives them racism. How are these connected? Steinem points out that everyone except white males require adjectives such as black doctor or female doctor (Steinem 31). This is an amazing example of why we still need feminism. some people will argue that feminism was over when women gained the right to vote, the right to own property, and other rights that were only guaranteed to men through history.
