Imagine a world where women aren’t given equal opportunities and are seen more as possessions than actual human beings. One might think of a point in history where these aspects of life were the norm. Some people argue that this is still our world today. Others argue that society has evolved from this into a more balanced version. The former are referred to as feminists. Feminism is a social justice movement, battling mostly sexism. (Opposing Viewpoints in Context) Christine de Pisan was the first “feminist” who called for women’s education in 15th century France. (Brunell) At this time, educating women was completely unthinkable. But, in that moment the movement began, progressing through time until it resurfaced in the United States in the 1900’s. During this time, Eleanor Roosevelt was appointed by President John F. Kennedy as the leader of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women. (Two Views on Feminism) Most people remember this as a time before women were given the right to work and vote, but feminists believe that this is still shown in today’s society. Feminists believe that women are still discriminated against in many aspects of life. Others argue that “women haven’t had more rights than contemporary American women today”.
