Imagine sitting in a classroom full of students taking practicums in blue corduroy jackets. One of these students was me as a meager freshman participating in the FFA regional Farm Business Management Career Development contest. I remember the frigid winter day and taking the practicum in the stuffy radiator heated room like it was yesterday because this day became a defining moment of my life.
Before I advance any further in the story I must step back and explain how I got here. As a middle schooler, I was not involved in many extracurricular activities. However, freshman year of high school I decided to join FFA. Before I knew it, the FFA advisor and multiple FFA members were encouraging me to participate in the Farm Business Management Career Development event since they knew I was pretty good at math. At first, I was a little hesitant since the other members of the team were juniors and seniors. Eventually, I agreed to join the team. Weeks before the regional contest I spent hours studying past exams and preparing for the test. When the day of the contest rolled around I was so nervous as I entered the classroom with sweaty palms to take the exam. First, it allowed me to recognize that no matter how small you think you are you can still achieve success. Therefore, I ran for the FFA chapter Sentinel position at the end of that year, something I never thought I would do. I was elected and became chapter Sentinel my sophomore year. I progressed on to become the chapter vice-president and president. Moreover, this experience gave me the confidence to become a leader in other school activities like becoming the National Honor Society president and the junior/senior class
