Fidel Castro The Dictator I chose was Fidel Castro. Castro fulfilled many of George Orwell’s allegory of Animal Farm. Fidel Castro lives a very interesting life. He came to power different than other leaders. He made a lot of good and bad decisions. His decisions hurt Cuba. Castro is still alive but not for long. Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on August 13, 1926 in Birán, Oriente Province, Cuba. His parents were Ángel Castro y Argiz and Lina Ruz González. He limited the rights of the Cuban people. He ruled from 1959- 2008. He had some good and some bad parts of his dictatorship. Most of these were bad ones. Fidel Castro is a lot like Napoleon from George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Fidel wanted to overthrow him because his government was corrupt. The government was corrupt but there were many US Corporations funding Cuban industrialism. Eventually Castro was selected for election in the Cuban parliament, but his rise to power was quickly halted when Batista cancelled the election, assuming supreme control over the Cuban government. In 1953 Castro gathered 120 guerillas and planned to attack a Moncada army barracks. This assault failed and Castro got sentenced 15 years in prison. Castro got out in 1955 and traveled to Mexico where he met Ernesto Che Guevara and planned to overthrow Batista. Castro and his men became anti-Batista movements. Batista started losing power quickly. A year after Castro and 80 plus men sailed on a yacht to the eastern part of Cuba and were instantly ambushed. Castro escaped with his brother and a couple others. They stayed in the mountains with 2 guns and not a lot of supplies. Following this a year Batista attacked with air bombers but the revolutionists held ground and wrested Batista. In 1959 on February 15 Castro became Prime Minister of Cuba. When he was prime minister he appointed his brother Raul commander of the Armed Forces. On April 17, 1961 the Battle of the Bay of Pigs took place. He had mostly bad ideas, which hurt and robbed the people of Cuba. Fidel was a harsh, very mean dictator. He limited the right of his own people. He told them he would help them they would we wealthy. He lied to them just as Napoleon had. Napoleon held a vote session. Napoleons name was the only one on the paper to vote for it. Fidel did the same exact thing that Napoleon did in Animal Farm. Fidel had some pros and cons here are some pros. Fidel got rid of legal discrimination, he also advanced education and health care. Castro also built schools and medical facilities. Castro imprisoned thousands of political opponents and made no move to election. He limited the rights of people by making sure people could only have a certain amount of land. He abolished private businesses so people couldn’t make money privately. Many Cubans left Cuba because of the limited economic and political rights. Most fled to the USA. (Montaner, Carlos Alberto, and Ignacio Ramonet) My dad left just before Fidel Came into power. Fidel Castro could have been a good leader if he didn’t have to limit the rights of his people. He was too busy with his guerillas trying to make movements in Latin America and Africa. Castro didn’t really care about his own people. Castro and Cuba’s friendships with other countries normalized except for the USA and later the Soviet
