The fidelity of implementing an intervention “occurs when teachers use the instructional strategies and deliver the content of the curriculums in the same way that they were designed to be used and delivered.”(http://www.lausd.k12.ca.us/lausd/offices/hep/news/fidelity.html)
In collaborating with the general education teacher to ensure the interventions we discussed were being implemented with fidelity, I first conducted a pre-observation. I met with the teacher during a time that was conducive to the her and observed the student along with how the teacher handled any situation(s) that came up within the class. I found this to be less intrusive and it allowed me to see the natural flow of the classroom. Immediately after the class was done, the teacher and I were able to sit down and discuss how the interventions were being implemented. Suggestions that I made were to make sure that the classroom climate was safe and positive, but not just for the student we were working with but for all students in the class. I didn’t want it to be just me observing and giving my opinions. I created a 5 point checklist that I had the student, the teacher and the IA fill out for the next several days after my pre-observation and suggestions. This checklist was an informal way for all three people to self reflect and give their personal feedback on how interventions were working for the student. This method was also an opportunity for the student to feel as though he gets to participate in his education and give feedback on how he sees any changes.
