The poem "Grass," was written by Carl Sandburg, although it may not seem like much for the fact that it is simple it holds a much deeper meaning. Not every poem needs to be lengthy in order to have a strong use of literary devices.
This poem as a whole could be used as a sense of imagery, it has representations of both literal and figurative imagery within. “I am the grass; I cover all,” (Line 3) is the main line after both paragraphs, this would be an example of the figurative imagery. By the author writing this it helps the reader, like myself, keep an open mind to infer what the author is trying to say, this line helps emphasize on the meaning of the secrecy within the poem. The entire poem is in the subject of a metaphor, by being the grass, it is explaining a person who gets trampled on daily and that the individual is only used to cover up secrets or hide things from others as well. The poem itself has a sense of literal imagery as well, instead of just a specific line, it is almost as if the entire poem uses this technique on its overall affect. Denotation is the dictionary definition of a word, without this being used in the poem the affect would not be as great as it currently is. If the poem did not use the line “I am the grass,” (Line 3) than it would not have a strong enough impact. This line represents how to feel in the poem, how to think about it, and explains what it is about. Without this sentence the significance of this poem would not be as empowering. Although this is a short poem, with shorter sentences, it still manages to have a big enough impact on the reader about the ideology of this poem. It is useful to have such devices in the poem to enhance its theme and tone and with the use of denotation in a brief poem, it allows the simplest of words to stand out even more than it usually
