The Alchemist Readers Response

The Alchemist was written by Paulo Coelho who is a Brazilian novelist. The story is about a boy named Santiago who leaves his home town in search of treasure he has repeatedly seen in his dream. Along his way he meets a king that tells him that he is following his personal legend and the universe will do everything it can to help him. "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." As he travels to the pyramids he has to stay at an oasis because of a war going on. He meets a girl he falls in love with named Fatima. She says she will only marry him if Santiago will find his treasure. Then he meets the alchemist and learns "Those who don't understand their Personal Legends will fail to comprehend their teachings." Santiagos main conflict is whether to go search for treasure or keep the great things he already has. The resolution is Santiago going and searching for the treasure and discovering his personal legend.

"The desert is a capricious Lady" this is a metaphor and shows that the desert is unpredictable and how it drives men crazy. "The wind screamed with delight" this is another example of figurative language used in the book. This is personification and explains that Santiago must listen to his heart. The theme focuses on fulfilling your personal legends and to follow your dreams. The theme is also to take risks and to not let fear win because you are going to wish you would had taken the risks in the
