After the events that transpired in the film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Senator Smith gained the respect of the public and was focused on making the United States a better place for all people. Furthermore, he was particularly vocal about his passion for helping children and the environment, so he would surely implement new policies and work with departments relating to these topics. It is probable that he would like to join the Senate Committees on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and Environment and Public Works. In addition, he would want to conduct oversight over Ginnie Mae and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, while working as a trustee for all three types of interests as defined in the text.

Throughout the film, he constantly fought the other senators on their scheme to earn a large sum of money at Wilet Creek and exposed the true nature of their actions to the country. He had very strong morals and his goal was to make the community a great place for all members. Furthermore, he was very passionate about speaking up for those who are underrepresented and oppressed, so he would primarily focus on their needs over those of the government. Therefore, as a trustee is defined as “a representative who votes based on what he thinks is best for his constituency,” Smith would certainly fall under this designation. The three types of interests that can be represented are individual constituents, organized interests, and the district as a whole. However, Smith would not likely choose one of those types of the others because he would see them all as equally important. First, he would be interested in the individual constituents and help those struggling to find jobs due to being underrepresented or not having a college education. Each person would have their basic rights met, regardless of uncontrollable factors, and be granted many different types of freedoms by the government. Next, Smith would want to help create legislation to support all people and help securing favorable tax status in order to ensure equality among the people, so he would also be concerned with the organized interests. Finally, while he is interested in helping each individual person, one of his main focuses was on diversity and eliminating discrimination in the society and country as a whole. This could be done by supporting cultural resource policies and working on federal projects to serve a large group of people in the district as a
