During the 1960’s, African Americans did not have the right to register for voting anywhere in America. It was especially difficult in the south where this movie, Selma, took place in Selma, Alabama. There were several marches led from Selma to the capital Montgomery, Alabama. Martin Luther King Jr. is the main character in the film and was the man who led the majority of the marches across the nation. Throughout this film, many film techniques were used to help the audience better understand the amount of injustice that occurred. Selma shows the significance of colors and slow motion effects that are two different techniques which emphasize how destructive inequality is portrayed throughout the movie. The use of color is important in a movie for many reasons because it can tell an audience how someone feels about certain issues. The very first scene in this movie, Martin Luther King Jr., and his wife were standing in the hotel bedroom while she was helping him put on his tie. Unlike President Johnson, he was repeatedly seen throughout the film in a black and white suit with red in his tie. When Governor Wallace spoke in front of people, he had the confederate flag behind him which is red. The confederate flag during this time was a symbol of pro-segregation. His tie had red in it, also symbolizing inequality. In the governors’ office, he also had the confederate flag behind his desk. The color of the couches was a deep red leather, whereas, in President Johnson's office, the couches were white with gray pillows. Differences in the colors of couches was a way the filmmakers showed how they both stood on inequality, and what should be done.
