Final Paper

Janine Kyser

In this paper I will be addressing ways to improve my overall health and well being. I will be addressing how to improve my physical, emotional, and mental health. I will be keeping a copy of my paper and keeping it as a visual reminder for my everyday life. I will also be putting up a dry erase board to keep track of my progress on a daily basis.
Physically there are many aspects of my life I need to work on. I need to come up with a plan to assist me in quitting smoking so that I can live longer and healthier. Smoking has greatly reduced my ability to exercise because I feel out of breath after just a few minutes of exercise. I believe that smoking has contributed to the increase of my blood pressure. I also need to make better dietary choices such as eating out less and eating less beef and more elk. Elk is a great supplement for beef as it has less fat. According to Nutritiondata.com 1oz of ground elk has 40 calories and is low in sodium. It also has a good source of phosphorus, protein, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and selenium.
Making sure that I keep my dermatology appointments is also very important since my mother, grandfather, and brother have all had skin cancer (melanoma). I need to make sure I have sun block on when I’m outside and report anything that looks suspicion on my skin to my dermatologist. I was told by my dermatologist that I have an increased risk of developing skin cancer because it runs in my family. According to skincancer.org in the past three decades more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined.
High blood pressure also runs in family and both my mother and father have high blood pressure. My blood pressure has gradually been on the rise over the last few months. I attribute this to many factors such as my cigarette smoking and stress levels. If I can come up with a plan to quit smoking and stick to it I believe this will help to decrease my blood pressure. It is also important I keep my regular doctors visits to make sure that my blood pressure is not getting to high. I suffered H.E.L.L.P syndrome in 2009 while carrying surrogate twins and was told by my doctor that I am now predisposed to high blood pressure because of the H.E.L.L.P syndrome.
Emotionally I need to continue to work with my Physiatrist to help me to function on a daily basis. Having PTSD and Anxiety has taken a toll on me both emotionally and physically. I will be discussing ways to reduce my daily stresses with my Physiatrist including how to come up with a plan for our Autistic daughter when she has a meltdown. I will also keep notes on my dry erase board to keep track of the dates and progress with both the DA and detective in California. Many times I lose track as to when I spoke to them last and having a board to keep track will be extremely helpful. Visual reminders work best for me as I tend to be very forgetful and need to have something to help me keep track of everything from things as simple as meal planning to doctor’s appointments. I will also start keeping a diary on a weekly basis to help me when I have panic attacks or when I feel overwhelmed. Getting my thoughts on paper helps me to calm my nerves
