There are seven trade programs at the Finch-Henry Job Corps Center. Enrolling in the Material Handling and Distribution Operations Program was an easy decision to make. My home is in Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson is the capitol of Mississippi and it is located close to Canton, Mississippi, the home of Nissan. Nissan built a large assemble plant in Canton in 2003. This plant has approximately 6000 employees. A subcontractor, MINACT-YATES LOGISTICS, LLC, employees the material handlers and the forklift operators. Finch-Henry Job Corps Center is also a MINACT company. It made perfect sense for me to enroll in the Material Handling and Distribution Program. I did my research and found the average beginning wage for a forklift operator and other information at the Labor Market Information website.1
The primary responsibilities for a Material Handler/Forklift Operator are varied.2 A Material Handler/Forklift operator not only loads/unloads material safety but makes sure it is free of damage before and after delivery. There is a lot of paperwork when moving items from one area to another. You must be safe and complete a safety course (OSHA). A forklift operator must have a licenses.

That wage increases with experience and time with a company. Working at Nissan in Canton, Mississippi will help me become independent. Living with my parent for a while will allow for saving enough for an apartment, a car and insurance, plus the other bills that will come with being independent.
