Traditionally, a christ figure is a martyr who sacrifices himself for the overall betterment of those around him. Christ Figures are presented throughout large varieties of literature and media as characters whose presence and actions resemble that of Jesus Christ. In A Separate Peace, Finny is presented as a christ figure in the same fashion as Mcmurphy from Cuckoo's Nest, and Luke from Cool Hand Luke are. A christ figure brings with them into a preexisting world, a new word or way of thinking that is essentially very different and not generally accepted. A Separate Peace by John Knowles explores the tumultuous relationship between two friends, Finny and Gene, at a prep school called Devon. In the time spent at Devon, Finny introduces a new game he invents to his fellow classmates, blitzball, and a club, The Super Suicide Society Of The Summer Session, which requires jumping off a tree to become one of its members. Finny is considered a walking miracle as he is able to get out of trouble with the headmasters by talking his way out of it, which arouses jealousy in Gene as no other boy in the school could do that. The same philosophy is also present in the patients at the hospital, that no one except Mcmurphy is able to annoy and disturb Nurse Ratched at the same level he could. Even Luke amazes his inmates by executing tasks that are thought to be impossible, like eating fifty eggs in an hour winning at poker with nothing. These miracles incur respect and a feeling of admirability in other eyes therefore developing disciples. Luke’s disciples were his fellow inmates, Mcmurphy's twelve disciples were the inmates he took with him at the fishing trip, and Finny's disciples were his fellow classmates whom he got to jump out of the
