There are five rhetorical strategies that are used in writing, sentence structure, selection and omission of details, overt statements, figurative language, and word choice. Using all of the rhetorical strategies is the key to writing a good piece. In my paragraphs I used all five rhetorical to describe the same setting with two different angles of vision.
Sentence structure, or how a sentence is arranged, is one of the most important details involved in writing. Sentence structure can determine how a reader will feel about the sentence they are reading and how they feel about the piece as a whole. Sentence structure can help paint a negative picture for readers, much like the sentence I used in my negative paragraph did. “While the students

Figurative language is used to enhance a piece of writing because it adds a certain level of creativity to a passage. It not only creates a visual image in the reader’s mind, but it can convey emotions from the writer to the reader as well. In my negative paragraph the class room was described as a prison cell for the students. Most people have not experienced being locked inside a prison cell but movies and T.V. shows have created an idea of what a prison cell may look like and what it may feel like being trapped inside one. By adding a human quality to the clock it makes the reader pay more attention and it helps them to relate to the passage more. Adding the figurative language to the paragraph leaves aspects of it open to the imagination of the readers, helping them relate to the …show more content…
In both of my paragraphs I used word choice to describe the teacher’s storytelling, but by using different word choices in each paragraph the mood of the paragraph changes completely. “…the teacher rambles on about topics unrelated to his lesson.” By describing what the teacher is doing as rambling it insinuates that the information he is giving is useless or unwanted. Unlike in my positive paragraph the connotation of the sentence is much more positive. “At the front of the classroom the teacher indulges the students with facts and stories” by saying that the teacher is indulging the students the reader gets a much more positive feel from the sentence. The word indulging makes it seem that what the teacher is telling the students is fascinating them and keeping them interested in the class. Word choice can give a passage life and character; word choice is what sets apart the good from the bad in all
