From all the class materials provided and all the subjects we have learned from the book there was one thing that stuck out to me. Fixed and growth mindsets I have learned about this in other classes, but with the theories and ideas from the class I believe that I have a better understanding of it. It’s not a complicated idea it just theorizes on how people think and how it could impact someone allowing their mindset to be fixed, or be able to develop. This ties into the self-concept and when you think all because you did something wrong, got a bad grade, or even got rejected that you should give up it puts a person into a fixed mindset. In chapter two the self in human relations I read about the Sociometer theory which is “Self-esteem acts as a gauge, or monitor, that measures the level of acceptance a person feels from his or her social environment” (38). This reminded me in Eduardo’s Ted Talk he mentioned Dr. Dweck and Dr. Claudia Mueller had an experiment on students praising half of them for being smart and the other half for working hard. The students then when faced with a more difficult problem to solve the kids that were told they worked hard did better than the kids that were told they were just smart. I bought this up because I believe the environment that students are taught in are very important for them to develop a growth mindset. Not only learning environment, but home environments as well. Most kids develop to the environment around them. After realizing how important the environment for you at home, and school is I reflected on my own.
