The flag of the United States is a sacred symbol that has a long and rich history. It represents all of America and many people have died to defend its country and preserve the ideals that it embodies. I feel that the desecration and disrespect of the flag are disgraceful. However, I know that they are legal under protection of the constitution. Nonetheless, I feel that the desecration of the flag should be illegal. It is disgraceful that any person who calls themselves a citizen of the United States can choose to disrespect the flag. Before I joined the ROTC class, I already respected the flag, but this class has taught me a whole new respect for it and what it means. I now know that it is more than just something that we stand up for every morning, but it is a symbol of the amount of freedom that my country offers me. The flag doesn’t require respect, but it should not be desecrated. It is sacred and there are those that have given the ultimate price because of their belief in this flag. It is outright hatred to burn or destroy or handle the flag in any such way. If we outlaw hate crimes, then it should be a crime to push your hatred onto the symbol of America. It does not have to be labeled terrorism, but there should be a punishment for those who choose to destroy the flag. At least a fine should be brought forth, but I feel that there should be a greater punishment, either community service, or short amount of jail time. To conclude, I do not feel that it is right to disrespect the flag. That being said, I feel it should remain legal. Although, I do not feel that the destruction should be legal. It is downright disgraceful for any human being to belittle another human’s life by destroying what they put their beliefs and their lives
