Flag football is more intense than many would think it is. It contains every aspect of regular football except the shoulder pads, helmets and tackling. Instead each player wears a belt with four flags that hang down from it. The objective is to rip this belt off the player to make the “tackle.” Flag football was a big part of my childhood and I played for almost six years. Each year my friends and I put together a team of eleven to take the field and play. We were an average team at best, except for one year where we made it all the way to the championship game. One of our best players and my friends, Jake, twisted his ankle on the first play and was not able to run at full speed for the rest of the game. This devastated our team, and this hurt our team early. They immediately scored a touchdown by throwing towards Jake, who could not keep up with his man. The game did not look to be in our favor at all at this point. All our work and our dream of a championship victory was about to crumble because of an injury. Our offense seemed to be held back by chains and was no longer any good after that injury. We gave up another touchdown after a long drive from them, and they decided to go for a two-point conversion. They completed the pass for two points instead of one and it was like a dagger in all of our hearts.
By now it was the fourth quarter and it was all tied up. It was all up to us to stop them from scoring and get the ball back and drive down the entire field to score. Fortunately, we were able to stall their offense and get the ball back with twenty seconds left on the clock. We were able to get one deep pass all the way down the field, but it was short of the end zone. We called a timeout to stop the clock with four seconds remaining. We had drawn up a play to run.
