Flappers in the 20’s
Flappers were the most essential part of the twenties because of the rights and independence they showed women to have. There was no more restraint from them when it came to having new experiences. Whether it was through changing their appearance, or trying things that had previously only been for men, the effect it had on today’s ladies changed how women were viewed since that time. Their origins began almost immediately after the 19th amendment was passed, when females first had the right to vote. Afterward, they had obtained a desire to change the female culture, to create social equality.

The quote above explains how there are many different styles of flapper. She describes herself as a flapper “if one judges by appearances,” meaning that she had the same hair that all of them had and did some of the things that they did, but not every flapper was the same. Some were more masculine, some more feminine, and others that were in-between. These differences were greatly shown through the fashion choices they made.
Beauty standards changed drastically as the flappers came along. Women no longer wore long skirts or covered their arms, the Victorian era of fashion long over in the (Spivack). The females of this generation wanted to relinquish the double standards that women had in the many years before (Independence Hall Association). Flappers either dressed akin to men by bounding their chest and cutting their hair into what would be considered the signature hairstyle of the time, or they did the complete opposite and grew Rapunzel-like hair and wore bold makeup. This was also the beginning of high heels and their journey to becoming a fashion staple; however, they were not as high as they are now.
