At Flour Bluff High School, the bell rings each hour, on the hour and every day is the same. Every day, except game day. I am not sure why the walls don’t shake as the hoard of students stomp down the hallway towards their next class but they hold steady. The wonderful thing about my high school is the tremendous school spirit and the anticipation of those Friday night lights only heightens the intensity of the day. The morning announcements highlight "players of the week" in each athletic program only adding to the mayhem. I often find myself observing fellow classmates as we walk the halls together. I watch as they admire the posters and banners that cover the halls with news of upcoming athletic events. The conversations I hear as I pass groups gathered by their lockers typically involve the softball team's no hitter game the night before or the new linebacker that transferred in from a rival school. At the end of each semester, an athletic banquet is held to honor the seasonal sport teams. The booster clubs associated with each team are well funded leaving the athletic programs at Flour Bluff with out a need that cannot be met.

Mr. Crenshaw sat with me for over an hour and we talked at length about everything we need to do to set this effort in motion. It turned out that Mr. Crenshaw wanted to implement an academic recognition program but had been absent a student to champion it. He challenged me to assemble a student committee of my peers that would provide oversight and to put a presentation together that would be given at the next school board meeting the following week.
