“Double, double, toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble” (4.1). A tale of three witches (the Weird Sisters), a King and his sons, Macduff, an army, and Macbeth. Where Macbeth faces a series of events including these characters who cause his want for power to become overwhelming. The Weird Sisters make predictions of Macbeth’s life and corrupt him into thinking power is worth everything. When these predictions come true, Macbeth is faced with the reality of death along with other characters in the play. Throughout Macbeth one must determine who remains in control due to the fluctuation of power.
In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth’s power is retained through her words. She tells Macbeth to “Only look up clear...leave the rest to me” (1.5). She realizes that Macbeth is her only way to get the throne. If she can manipulate him through the words she speaks into his ear she can have all the power she desires. At the same time she tells Macbeth “Yet do I fear thy nature, it is too full o’ the milk of human kindness” (1.5). By beginning with “All hail Macbeth…thou shalt be King hereafter” (1.3), they immediately gain control of the whole play. Their ability to toil with the mind of Macbeth and other characters gave them the power to control fate. Following the predictions of Macbeth being Thane of Glamis, Cawdor, and King, the Weird Sisters continue to enhance Macbeth by telling him to “Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth” (4.1).
